Margaret Cory
Margaret has been a garden designer in Sydney for 20 years. She started her horticultural profession in Sydney with a garden shop, called The Potting Shed, in Balmain, concentrating on perennials and old-fashioned roses.
Margaret designs and installs residential gardens; from concept, drawing detailed plans, working with various trades, to sourcing plants from growers she has dealt with for years. She is a member of the Australian Institute of Horticultural and was on the NSW State Council for a number of years.
Margaret was asked to design three display gardens for Sydney in Bloom garden festival held in The Domain. These three gardens, called ‘Spring in Small Spaces’, featured foliage and blossom, antique Turkish amphorae and a beautiful marble fountain.
She also designed and procured plants and decorative items for the inaugural display garden, ‘A Garden of Visual Delights’, at the Collectors’ Plant Fair at Bilpin.
Margaret writes for Your Garden magazine and has had articles published in
Highlife magazines: in NSW, SA and Tasmania. The latter were on her travels through France and her days working as a jobbing gardener in London where she bought her plants from the historic Covent Garden.
In 2007 she was commissioned by Reader’s Digest to design a formal herb garden for The Complete Book of Herbs. Her watercolour plan is featured in that publication. She also watercolours her plans of gardens.
Early in her career Margaret discovered there was a need for a plant support for perennials, bulbs and soft shrubs. She produces the extremely effective and very simple galvanized steel, powder coated Curved Perennial Cradles.
Margaret is a member of a group with a love of Persian miniature painting. They have held one exhibition and are working towards a second in December. Three of Margaret’s watercolours sold at a recent charity art auction she organized for a clinic in India testing mothers and babies for HIV/AIDS, supplying nutrition, medicines and health education to rural villagers in the Tansa Valley.
